The Brutal Engineering Rock Bottom Chain Catch is designed to be a frictionless way to keep your chain from falling off the bottom of your chainring under the most brutal conditions. The chain catch is designed to keep your chain from whipping off the bottom of your chainring during large G-outs and impacts. It also keeps the chain in line during back pedaling. It is highly adjustable and easily replaceable. When setup properly in combination with an upper guide it is virtually impossible for a well maintained drivetrain to drop a chain.
We recommend using the chain catch over a chain tensioner as chain tensioners are a source of friction and failure.
We engineered the chain path to a tight tolerance which leaves no room for the chain to disengage from the chainring.
The mounting angle is adjustable to accommodate 38t and fewer chainrings.
The catch features spacers ranging from 1mm to 4mm which allow precise chain line alignment to minimize rubbing. The spacers snap into place to adjust lateral spacing for different crank configurations.
We created 3 mounting locations on the Rock Bottom to maximize the chance you can install and remove the catch quickly without removing your cranks. Access depends entirely on your chainring as a solid chainring would obviously block access to the arm bolts.
The catch is designed to be tough and robust, but it lives in the strike zone. Should it be damaged it is easy to replace, often without the need to remove any other parts. We recommend keeping a spare.
Includes all mounting hardware.
Fits on the Rock Bottom frame for most bike geometries.
Designed to work with all standard mountain bike chain sizes.
Weight: 12g. 14g with hardware.
The catch is manufactured in Maryland, USA by Brutal Engineering. Material is PA12CF25 formed using Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) for extreme toughness and high wear resistance.
FDM is a form of 3D printing. 3D printed parts will show layer lines and unique cosmetic defects which are to be expected. We test each part for strength and flexibility to ensure there are no layer bonding issues.
Designed to work with all standard mountain bike chain sizes.
We designed the catch to be frangible so in racing scenarios if things go bad the wing of the catch should break off instead of getting sucked into the chain ring.
While the PA12CF25 material is abrasion resistant it will wear over time and require periodic replacement.
Certain chain lines will create rubbing on one side which normally reduces over time. The chain path is designed at the maximum angle of chain self-engagement so if rubbing is experience you most likely have an out-of-spec chain line.
